Finally, Jamboree week is here.
High school doesn’t have the luxury of a preseason or scheduling Duquesne University to get their last-minute reps before the new season starts. Instead, they have the Jamboree.
Like any NFL preseason game, the Jamboree will typically feature some of the starters followed by nearly all of the other guys; role players or second, third stringers, junior varsity guys, and freshmen.
And if you’re a football sicko like me, it’s the best and only time you can watch multiple teams and multiple mini-games on the same night, and often at the same time like Kirkwood, St. Mary’s, Troy, and Lafayette.
Even air balloons! This place had everything.
With the final tune-up out of the way, the real thing comes next week. Kirkwood High School is one of the more interesting teams to follow this season. They return so many starters but they graduated Owen Nesslage, their starting quarterback who had an unreal season in 2024 (nearly 4,000 passing yards).
In his place is senior transfer quarterback Cooper Owens, who is more of a dual-threat playmaker.
Kirkwood kicks off the season against Fort Zumwalt West next Thursday at 7pm.
